Local Hosta Sources

Beverly and Phillip have almost brought the hostas into their home. This HUGE specimen of H. 'Millentium'has been growing in this pot right by their back porch door for about a year. It is supposed to be a "slow-growing" specimen, according to the registration data, but apparently it loves the sunny location.

'Kiwi Sunrise' grows next to it. Phillip is especially proud of his 'Frances Williams,' which he grows underneath a specially constructed box covered in shade cloth. His theory is that the burning usually seen is caused not by sun damage, but by frost. As soon as the eyes start emerging in early spring, he places the box atop the plant, and doesn't remove it until late May. The shade cloth insulates the plant, and keeps the edges beautifully unburnt. Their main hosta garden is under the shade of very old trees, but a specially treated fabric keeps the roots of the hostas separated from the tree roots.

This clump of 'Eromenea' is almost 5' across. Whimsically named areas of the garden include Hosta Holler, the Red Petiole District and the Hosta Hen House!
