Presidents Message
Regardless of what the National Weather Service may have stated, 2007 was the driest year on record. There were several occasions when the areas south of Atlanta received rain (at the Atlanta Airport where they officially measure rainfall), but not a drop fell here in North Georgia. The best gift that we could have wished for was the rain that arrived Christmas day. It certainly was a welcome event. By the end of December, we had received over two inches of rain (at Tucker 3.3 inches). To non-gardeners this might not seem like much, but every little bit helps improve the moisture level in our parched soils. We are thankful for what we have received. I hope that 2008 will be a better year weather wise.
A heart felt “Thank you” to the outgoing Board and officers for all the hard work these past two years. Through their efforts, the Georgia Hosta Society is in great shape financially. Not only can we print our newsletter, but also we can do it with great color photos in the email and printed copy versions. What a treat!
As I begin my first year as president, I recognize that it is the involvement and support of the members that make any organization grow and be successful. I challenge each member to participate in the Society’s activities. It’s a great way to get to know your fellow memb
ers. Please feel free to contact me at anytime with your suggestions and comments. Although I have been a member for over ten years, there may be some areas that I am not up to speed on, so please bring any oversights to my attention. My email is lyonsfar@alltel.net, home phone: 706-265-3328 or my cell phone: 770-315-3328.
George Schmid has a wonderful program on hosta flowers for the January meeting and the Education Workshop, prior to the meeting, will be on hosta resources on the internet. The meeting place will be at the Tucker United Methodist Church but in the Gymnasium, which is located behind the Youth Center. Bring a snack for the refreshment table if you desire. Looking forward to seeing you at the meeting and have a prosperous and healthy 2008.
Julia Lyons, President
