SUMMER EDUCATION CORNERS DURING THE SERENDIPITY GARDEN TOUR
In our continuing efforts to keep our members informed of national "doings" we are offering brief education corners during our Serendipity Garden tours this summer.
The Benedict Garden Performance Award System is designed to recognize hostas that demonstrate superior garden performance - garden worthy plants that have passed the test of time, that exhibit cultural superiority, and that can be appreciated in the landscape both from a distance and under close observation.
There are three levels of awards. Winners are determined by the vote of AHS Garden Judges using a point scoring system. The awards are presented annually at the National Convention to the originators of the winning cultivars. The awards are limited to registered cultivars only. To be considered for a Benedict Garden Performance Award, a cultivar must have been registered for at least three years.
We plan to talk about cultivars in several of the tour gardens. You do NOT have to be an AHS judge to participate in this discussion or become an AHS Garden Judge. We will discuss how the cultivar is garden worthy and how it has passed the test of time ; what is the cultivar's cultural superiority and how is it appreciated from a distance and under close observation.
To repeat, you can become a Garden Judge without being an AHS Judge. We will discuss this at the class and have forms available in the garden for those interested. However, you must be a member of The American Hosta Society for a minimum of three years.
